DVD-R é um DVD normal. DVD-RW permite que se grave por cima do que está gravado (ReWritable).
Os DVD's que são DVD+R e DVD+RW tem ligeiramente menos capacidade que os anteriormente referidos e não são classificados como DVD's de gravação oficiais. Atenção: Os DVD's + usam um logotipo que diz "RW", embora possam ser apenas DVD+R. Existem algumas diferenças minimas entre a versão + e a versão -, mas nada que salte muito à vista.
O DVD-ROM tem dados que só podem ser lidos e não escritos. DVD-RAM é como o DVD-RW, embora tenha algumas melhorias técnicas.
Os DVD's com DL (DoubleLayer) têm o dobro da capacidade normal dum DVD. Por exemplo, o DVD-R DL (também conhecido por DVD+R9) tem a capacidade de 7.96Gb (embora digam que têm 8.54 Gb).
Também foi feito o DVD+RW DL mas existem problemas de compatibilidade com os leitores de DVD actuais.
Para os seguintes, é preciso uma lente óptica para os ler e gravar.
Os Blu-Ray permitem 25Gb de armazenamento e os Blu-Ray DL permitem cerca de 50Gb.
Os HD DVD têm 17Gb de capacidade e existem HD-DVD DL (34Gb) e HD-DVD TripleLayer (51Gb).
Os HD DVD-R são uma variante dos HD DVD e contam com 15Gb (a versão DL conta com 30Gb).
O HD DVD-RAM é o sucessor dos DVD-RAM e tem 20Gb de armazenamento.
Finalmente, existem os BD-R (Blu-Ray Disc Recordable) e conta com 25Gb (a versão DL conta com 50Gb). Os BD-RE podem ser regravados e são muito mais caros.

Teoricamente os valores a que Giga, Mega e Kilo se referem seriam múltiplos de 1000, mas em informática são apenas valores próximos, pois o fator de multiplicação é 1024. Desta forma, um DVD, por exemplo, que teoricamente tem 4.7 GB, na realidade tem 4700000000 Bytes, 4589844 KB, 4482 MB e, finalmente, 4.38 GB.
